I didn’t grow up planning to build fences. I started in construction building decks and pergolas. One day my boss asked if I wanted to try fencing because the projects didn’t take as long. At the time, it was just a way to stay busy and make a living.

But after a few years, I started noticing something that didn’t sit right with me. Homeowners were spending thousands of dollars on fences that were already leaning, warping, or failing just a few years later. Many of them had to pay to replace their fence much sooner than they expected.

So I went back and looked at the fences I built early in my career. Some were still straight. Some weren’t. That’s when I realized the most important part of a fence isn’t what you see above ground — it’s what’s underground. The depth and shape of the post hole determine whether a fence lasts or fails.
